Zespri International cross-promoted its New Zealand-grown kiwifruit this fall with Mexico-based Tajin, a maker of seasonings.
Hispanic retail markets in Texas served sliced kiwifruit rimmed with Tajin seasoning in promotions running from Aug. 14 to Sept. 5, said Susan Hughes, a spokeswoman for Tauranga, New Zealand-based Zespri.
Promotions ran in 32 stores in Houston, 24 in Dallas and 2 in Austin, Hughes said.
The seasoning consists of chile peppers, salt and dehydrated lime juice. Sales of Zespri kiwifruit during the promotion were triple the amount normally sold during demos, Hughes said.
