These students helped Zespri International expand the consumption of kiwifruit at the University of Massachusetts during the commodity group's “Kiweek” promotion.

The Redwood City, Calif.-based Zespri North America, exclusive North American marketer of New Zealand kiwifruit, introduced students to the fruit during a Sept. 13-16 promotion at the University of Massachusetts.

During “Kiweek,” the university’s dining staff offered 11 kiwifruit dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner, including smoothies, parfaits, gazpacho and shrimp tempura, according to a news release.

Students staffed sampling stations, distributing kiwifruit halves and handing out nutrition information and kiwifruit tattoos.

Kiwifruit flavor, fruit appeal and versatility were a pleasant surprise for most students, Martha Monaghan, UMass Dining’s special events manager, said in the release.

“Our students loved the kiwi menu choices,” she said. “Kiweek at UMass Dining dovetailed with our director’s challenge to encourage customers to double their consumption of fruits and vegetables and supported our ‘Stealth Health’ program.”

Karen Brux, Zespri’s North American marketing representative, said it was one of the organization’s best promotions and that the recipes became crowd pleasers.

Zespri is planning to extend its nutrition outreach to other school foodservice programs this season and plans sampling at elementary schools.
